Many people have only recently heard about Reiki because it’s become more prevalent in the United States in the last few years. The reality is that Reiki energy has been around for thousands of years although this form of alternative medicine was officially developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui. Since originating in Japan, Reiki has been adapted into several cultural traditions across the world. So if you were skeptical about Reiki, you can rest assured that it is holistic healing for the mind, body, and spirit. Here, we will answer some questions that will hopefully encourage you to make your first appointment with a Reiki professional.
What is Reiki?
Reiki is a Japanese technique used to help reduce stress and promote relaxation as well as healing. It is administered by laying on hands and is based on spiritually guided life force energy that flows through us. According to The International Center for Reiki Training, a life force flows within the physical body though pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. That’s why someone who may be suffering from joint pain or even the flu can feel restored after their Reiki session.
Who Administers Reiki?
Reiki is administered by anyone who has training in reiki healing. This could be a professional practitioner, a healthcare provider, or even a friend or relative who has been trained in Reiki. Find someone who you feel comfortable with and who has enough experience to be able to describe the process so that you may be even more comfortable during your session.
Where is Reiki administered?
Reiki should be performed in a quiet place so you are not disturbed by anything. Practitioners have a space designed to meet this need such as an office, their home or even your home if you desire that. They frequently play soft meditation-type music during the session as a way of masking ambient noise, but you can let your practitioner know if you prefer silence.
How long are Reiki sessions?
Reiki sessions can be anywhere from 15 or 20 minutes to 90 minutes. This really depends on your specific needs. If it’s your first time, you can expect the session to be an hour long. Once you’ve been attending sessions with more frequency, these may be shorter but that depends on you. Just make sure to let the practitioner know if you have a health condition that might impact your lying flat on your back, front or if you have any areas that are sensitive to touch.
Is Reiki Similar to Massages?
Like Massages, Reiki is typically performed on a massage table. Other than that, it’s something else entirely. With Reiki, you are fully clothed because the practitioner will just be doing light, non-invasive touching. Hands will be placed and held on several locations on the head and front and back of the torso. The placement of the hands should never be intrusive, nor should there be any pressure as you may experience during a massage intended to remove trigger points. You will certainly not experience any pain because it is very light touching.
Placement of the hands on the limbs can be done if there is an injury in that area. The Reiki practitioner can hold her hands just off the body if needed and many offer Reiki in this way. You’ll basically feel some of the warmth of the hands hovering over your body.
What do you have to do during the Reiki session?
You are not expected to do anything but lay comfortably. You don’t even have to try to relax because the Reiki will take care of that for you. Your practitioner may ask you some questions during the session or he/she may not. You may even fall asleep during even the short session as most people have experienced this. If you become uncomfortable, you can adjust your position at any time.
What do people experience after the Reiki session?
In our experience, people typically have said they felt refreshed and very at peace after their session. Some have fallen asleep during the session and feel rejuvenated and free of pain. For some, the experience of Reiki is very subjective and sometimes subtle and for others the experience may be energizing and impactful. The overall response is definitely positive. People come out feeling better, mentally and physically, than they were when they first walked in. It is as if stress was lifted out of their bodies.
Besides the immediate experience of the Reiki, you may notice other changes later in the day such as stronger digestion, a sense of being more centered, and sleeping deeply that night.
What can I expect after the first session?
Your Reiki practitioner may suggest you come back for a series of sessions. On average, four sessions are typically what is recommended. Just be sure to discuss with your practitioner how best to space the sessions to suit your needs and your schedule.
We hope we have given you a better sense of what Reiki is and what to expect, but you don’t truly know the value of it until you try it. We think this is a wonderful supplement to your regular massage. Feel free to call Melanie Villafana at 706-990-8868 if you have any questions or to set up your first appointment.
